The advent of Volleyball in the British Virgin Islands dates back to the 1940s, during the era of the Virgin Islands Secondary School. However, it was not until 1975 that the BVI Amateur Volleyball Association was formed. 

The association became a member of the Federation of International Volleyball Associations in 1979.
