Basketball was first introduced in the BVI in 1967 by Englishman Terry Bennett. 

The BVI Amateur Basketball Association was founded in 1974, and the first court for the association's league was constructed in 1975. This outdoor facility was used until 2001, when it was demolished to make way for a Multipurpose Sports Center. 

The BVIABA became affiliated with the Federation of International Basketball Associations (FIBA) in 1978, and became one of the charter sports in the formation of the BVI Olympic Committee in 1980.
