TORTOLA—Dion Anselm and Percy Rhoden advanced to the semifinals of the Nagico National Tennis Championships on Tortola, with straight sets victories over Greg Boyd and Humphrey Leue Wednesday, at the Tortola Sports Club in Pasea.
Anselm was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Boyd while Rhoden—who beat Anselm in the semifinals during their First Caribbean International Bank match up in December before losing to St. Thomas’ Koesi Ohno—turned back Leue, 6-2, 6-2.
The winner of tonight’s Anselm vs Rhoden match, advances to face the winner of Sheldon Walters and Ken Adamson in Saturday’s final.
“I’ve been looking forward to this match since last year,” Anselm said. “He beat me in December, so this is like a rematch. He’s excited and I’m excited of us meeting each other. I think I’m ready for him.”
In other men’s games, top seeded Sheldon Walters had a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Denzyl Walwyn, while Ken Adamson beat Peter Poole, 6-2, 6-3.
Mark McDonald turned back Anthony Palmer, 6-2, 6-3 in the men's plate draw and Nevile Sorrentino pulled out a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Terence Gumbs.
Tortola Sports Captain Rachel Johnson said the weeklong tournament has been successful so far and the level of play has been outstanding. “Things have gone well in the seeding especially with the men’s and women’s singles which goes to show that the draw has gone correctly and the people who are suppose to be playing each other are playing each other,” said Johnson, who was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Linda Romney. “We have all four seeds reaching the semifinals in the men’s and women’s divisions on Friday evening.”
Defending champ Musonda Poole stormed past Lyn Sorrentino, 6-0, 6-3. Carol Mitchell beat Sue Sorrentino, 6-0, 6-0, with Sally Rochester overcoming Cherlin Armstrong, 6-2, 6-4.
“We’ve been very lucky with the weather which has balmy evenings that have been quite hot and quite a bit of the players said they’ve had to keep their fluid levels up,” Johnson said.
