TORTOLA—Sprinter Britney Wattley departed the territory on Tuesday, to pursue her academic and athletic careers, bound with a full athletic scholarship from Morgan State University in Maryland, where the head coach is Neville Hodge, a former U.S. Virgin Islands sprinter who competed in the BVI.
Wattley—who has already made the qualifying standard for the IAAF World Youth Championships in Italy this summer—had the most outstanding Inter-house sports day of any female athlete in the history of the event last year, when the competition at the Elmore Stoutt High School returned for the first time since 2004.
Wattley scored 50 points to join her sister DeAnna in winning the Victrix Ludorum, while leading Carlise House to last year’s title—ending a 20-year drought.
Wattley who graduated last June, etched her name on four inter-house records. She won the 100 meters in 12.39 seconds into a negative 3-5 mph headwind, demolished her aunt’s 31-year old 200 meters mark and bettered her sister DeAnna electronic standard as well.
Wattley became the first to run under 25 seconds during inter-house competition when she flew past Rose Phillips’ 1977 mark of 25.4 seconds and DeAnna’s 26.32 electronic time, with a run of 24.70 seconds. The mark was second to Ashley Kelly’s all time scholastic mark of 24.61 at the time.
Wattley—who will major in Business Administration at Morgan State—is the BVI 200 meters Youth Record holder. She recorded personal bests of 12.13, 24.55 and 57.27 in the 100, 200 and 400 meters last season. She was also a member of the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 Meter Relay teams that ran 46.69 and 3 minutes, 42.73 seconds respectively.
