TORTOLA—For almost three quarters of Saturday night’s championship game at the Multipurpose Sports Complex in Road Town before the largest crowd this season, Young Legs seemed poised to join the Virgin Gorda Jr. Mystics and Ghetto Mix, in complete and reverse sweeps of the Jr. and intermediate divisions. The East’s Douron Phillips had other ideas.
The senior division championship MVP, scored 13 of his game high 22 points in the second half, when the East returned to their running game, turning a two point deficit into a 10 point lead from which Young Legs would never recover. The East went on to a convincing, 78-66 victory.
Phillips, who stuffed his final two points for a dunk off a turnover and fast break as teammates watched—also pulled nine rebounds. Damien Ottley—who walked off with the sportsmanship award—settled for a 14 point 11 rebounds double, double. Dwayne “Kobo” Penn pulled 10 rebounds and added seven points before cutting down the nets.
Kennedy Bass had Young Legs’ top score with 14 points. Keithwarner Rhymer bagged his fourth straight double double, this time with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Jevaughn Cameron tossed in another 10.
“The East team were hungrier than and more aggressive than us,” noted Young Legs coach Brian “Bash” Brewley, who was seeking his second title this season after leading Ghetto Mix to the intermediate division crown. “My guys weren’t getting back and the East was beating me to every loose ball. Tonight, they came more focused and they had more energy than us. It was like in the opening game,” he pointed out.
“My guys weren’t getting back, boxing out or getting the rebounds and they were getting three and four chances to make one basket. Everybody had a wonderful game for the East End team. Congratulations to the East. They played a helluva ball game.”
After taking the lead at the end of the third quarter, Vene “Bego” Turnbull said he told his team to take it inside and it worked. “Douron did an awesome job tonight along with Kobo (Dwayne Penn)—those big guys—along with everybody else,” he pointed out. “Our main thing was to take Kennedy (Bass) and their big man (Keithwarner Rhymer) out of the game, but we had to make up our minds to put some distance. Once we got that done, we were on the way to glory.”
Turnbull said he couldn’t find words to describe the feeling of repeating, after taking a 2-0 lead, then saw Young Legs evening the series and forcing a fifth game. “I just thank God for this organization,” he said. “I do a lot of praying. And all the things we had to do on the court, we communicated and that helped us tonight.”
