TORTOLA—Officials have confirmed that 17 of the 23 member countries including host British Virgin Islands, will field over 450 athletes in the Caribbean Union of Teachers Games, which kicks off with a parade of teams Friday at 9 a.m. and ends on Saturday evening. Activities will be held at the Mondo track at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds. The competition targets athletes under 15 years and includes under 13, under 11 and under 9.

Teams began arriving on Tortola on Tuesday, for the two day competition, which has produced some of the region’s best athletes, including reigning Olympic Games 200 meters champion Veronica Campbell of Jamaica. Each team is allowed a maximum of 40 athletes.

Activities will kick off on Thursday afternoon at 6 p.m., with a welcome reception at the Palm Groove Park. Prior to Friday’s opening ceremonies, there will be a parade of teams from the athlete’s village at the Elmore Stoutt High School. Games coordinator and BVI Teachers Union president Cecil Hodge, said teams should reach the field by 9:30 a.m., ahead of the opening ceremonies. The first race is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.

“We are looking for a very safe, healthy and competitive meet,” Hodge said. “I would love to see the public coming out and supporting their individual teams. We know the business community has supported—they have responded to the BVI Teachers Union’s call for assistance.”

BVI coach Ileta Potter, said she looking for good performances from the team, particularly in the under 11 and under 13 boys and girls. Several of the athletes turned up during a recent competition in Miami. “We have some prospects that we are looking at in different events,” Potter said. “Once they go and concentrate we should do very well in the sprints and jumps.”
Admission to the event is $5 for adults and $2 for children.
