TORTOLA—Defending BVI Softball Association women’s champions West End Warriors, avenged an earlier loss by ending the Crushers’ five game winning streak with a 10-6 Sunday night victory at the Old Recreation Grounds, in a battle between teams that have won the last four titles.
The Warriors scored four in the first, three in the second and two in the third to build the early lead, before the Crushers scored five in the fifth cutting into the deficit.
“This is a big win for us, because the last time, I told Austin (Todman) there was horse racing in St. Thomas and I couldn’t make it because I went to the races,” recalled Warriors coach Eli “Yampi” Nibbs. “I told him as long as there’s no horse racing I’m going to win it easy because my girls only need a little coaching. The last time, they had no coaching and played loose. This time, they played with a coach and won easily.”
Nibbs said it was good to knock the Crushers from the ranks of the unbeaten, because they had beaten up on all the teams. “I feel happy about this win,” he said. “It told my girls if we are going to win, we have to hit the ball and we went out there and started off by getting four runs in the first inning. This win is a big one for me.”
Cassie Stoutt pitched a complete game for the victory. Alya Smith, who was relieved by Kathleen Fahie, took the loss. Leniece Lewis had two hits in four at bats, scored three times and drove in one. Crushers’ Kathleen Fahie was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
In the men’s game, Veteran Roy “Panhandle” Hill fired a 3-hitter, as the Hurricanes whipped the Dodgers, 27-11. Rhodni Skelton led the Hurricanes’ 14-hit attack with a 3-ror-3 game. He scored four times and finished with 5 RBIs. Aubrey “Kong” Frett had two hits in four at bats, scored twice and drove in six. The ‘Canes had three errors and left five on base.
The winless Dodgers committed five errors and stranded six. Adam Sash was tagged with the loss
