TORTOLA—David Susana had 21 points and six rebounds to lead four scores in double digits, as Ghetto Mix began their BVI Basketball Federation intermediate division title defense with a convincing 82-58, Sunday night victory over the Long Look Bulldogs at the Multipurpose Sports Complex in Road Town.
Sean Woods followed up with 18 points for the defending champs, who will face 13 teams in the league’s biggest division. McKenzie Baltimore and Leando Creque tossed in 11 and 10 points to the tally, with Creque pulling nine rebounds.
Tad Martin had 17 points to lead the Bulldogs. Kevin Issac added another 14 and seven rebounds.
“This victory was important to set the tone,” coach Brian “Bash” Brewley who also coaches Young Legs said. “I was looking to get the mixture of players together. We have some changes at point guard and center, but, basically, we’re still the same. Our strength is still to run.”
Terry “Federal” Turnbull said his Long Look Bulldogs were ill prepared. “We weren’t getting together, this is our first time as a team,” he said. “When practices were called, only one or two people showed up and we were not organized. But, in the next game, we’ll do a lot better.”
In the other intermediate division game on opening weekend, Da Boys turned back 2006 champs Run It Red, 80-73. Andre Stoutt was the leading scorer with 24 points. Cedric King chipped in another 20. Travis Fonseca had Run It Red’s top score with 14 points. Akim “Chunky” Titley and Jamal Todman tossed in 13 and 12 each.
Federation president Guy “The General” Malone described opening weekend as ‘amazing.’ “It was much more than we expected and I’m pleased with how the teams turned out in tehi colors and how they are so cooperative,” he said. “I find as I walk about and implement things for the teams, they are saying ‘I’m ready to work with you’ because we realize you and the committee are working very hard, so it’s a nice feeling.”
