TORTOLA
—Since the opening of the BVI Softball Association league, May 4 had been circled on the calendar of the league’s top pitchers, Hurricanes’ Neville “Sheep” Smith and Young Talent’s Allen “Woodrow” Smith, following Young Talent’s 3-1 opening day victory.

Sunday’s rematch did not disappoint. Neville gave up a leadoff single to Raphael Frazer, hit two batsmen along the way retired the last 16 batters while striking out 13, in a 3-0 pitching gem between cousins. Allen who countered with 14 strikeouts, gave up a led off triple to Cedric Smith in the third. Brent Herbert struck out but reached first on a pass ball, before Rhodni Skelton walked and Sylvester “Bucker” Johnson doubled them in with the game’s lone scores.

“It was a game that in my mind was a must win for the Hurricanes,” manager Arnold Lettsome said. “These are the kind of games you must win heading towards the playoffs, so that you can go with the confidence that you can beat the other team. You don’t want them to beat you so close to the playoffs to give them that confidence.”

Smith said the game had been on his mind since the opening day loss. “I told Woodrow I would shut him out and I came with that intention,” he explained. “But, they got one hit and I still got the shut out.”

Allen said the game was a good one but the batting was his team’s problem. “Sheep was on his game tonight and when he’s on, it’s tough to hit him,” he noted. “But, that’s the way it is sometimes. However, the Hurricanes are not that big. We had a few miscues, but, we’ll be back.”

Defending women’s champs West End Warriors roughed up Adina “Sugar Bowl” Nibbs—who led them to their first title last season—in her Lady Braves’ debut, en route to a 12-6 victory. The Warriors constructed 11 hits to give Cassie Stoutt the victory. Roxie Lettsome had a 4-for-5 game including a homer and scored four times with 3 RBIs. Pasha Stoutt had a 2-for-3 day with three runs batted in. Lady Braves’ Laura Issac was 1-for-4 and drive in two.
