TORTOLA—As the 2008 BVI Basketball Federation league prepares to open, more and more talk is being generated on who will win the championship this season, particularly in the senior division. The Guns in particular has generated the most interest because of the players they have picked up during the off season.
Andrew Fahie—perhaps the most high profiled coach because he’s also the Minister of Sports—has been coaching long before entering politics and has produced teams that have had stellar regular seasons only to flop in the playoff. Entering this season as well, Fahie can take solace in the fact that he does have a championship under his belt as his long suffering West End Warriors are the BVI Softball Association’s reigning champs after years of futility.
Could the new additions be the catalysts that put the Guns on top? “I see it helping us,” Fahie said. “But I still don’t have us at the team to beat. The team to beat is still the East. They are the champions and Young Legs are a former champion. What we have done is try to put a team together to get past the playoffs.”
Fahie recalled that his squads have had problems in the playoffs and one of his team made it to the championships in the past but were cut short from winning that coveted tile. “We are known to be a good regular season team,” he said. “We have put a team together that should beat the teams that everyone should be watching, which is the East and Young Legs.”
What does he see now as the strength of the team with the additions? Fahie said he sees veteran leadership, in terms of court leadership. He said that is something they have lacked during close games—especially in the playoff. “I think that’s what we have added,” Fahie stated. “We realize that it’s not automatic and we have to fight very hard. East has gotten stronger and Young Legs has gotten stronger also, so we added some leadership on and off the court.”
The league opens on Saturday, May 10.
