—Dave West’s Jurakan, a Meleges 32, successfully defended its Royal BVI Yacht Club Virgin Queen Pizza Pursuit Race in the Sir Francis Drakes Channel on Saturday, that presented the 12 boats on two courses with a range of conditions.

West said at the defending champs, they came prepared. “We knew how hard the fight would be,” he said. “The weather surprised everybody. It certainly didn’t act like the forecast said so that was a challenge for everyone. At one point, we were so far in last place, we thought we were in a different race.”

The eight boats in the spinnaker class went from Nanny Cay, up to Road Harbor, down to Little Thatch and returned to Nanny Cay. West said he likes that kind of race since there are no ratings to worry about, which makes it fun. “Coming into the finish line it’s always a fight for everybody,” he noted.

Royal BVI Yacht Club captain of sailing Guy Eldridge whose Luxury Girl finished fifth behind West said he was happy with the turnout. “The weather did not completely cooperate but we got a full range of conditions from completely nothing to over 20 knots,” he recalled. “There was really good spirit show by everybody and there was some really good sailing by some of the people out there.”

Based on the weather forecast which predicated winds from the north east, Eldridge said the racing boats course was set for upwind-downwind which they prefer, while the cruising boats were to sail across the wind which is generally faster for them. “Unfortunately, the wind went southeast and the cruising boats had to go and fight straight into the wind, while the racing boats got to go on a short course in a straight line,” he said.
