—At least 27 teams—14 of which are in the intermediate division—submitted rosters during Saturday’s three hour registration period for the upcoming BVI Basketball Federation league which opens on May 10. The number is two more than last year and federation president Guy “The General” Malone, said the process went well.

“In the past, you would have teams lagging to get their rosters in but this time we had a very good turnout with all the teams meeting the deadline, producing their rosters and submitting their insurance fees as we discussed and agreed on in previous meetings,” Malone noted. “It was a good turnout.”

With only five teams in the senior division, Malone said he doesn’t know why but most of the competition seems to be in the intermediate division. He recalled that at one point the intermediate division had been abandoned before he became president and reinstituted after he took the helm during his second year. He recalled that most teams were concentrating on playing in the division and not trying to strengthen or improve the senior league. “We are going to be looking at it to see how we can best improve it in the future to have at least 10 solid teams in each division,” he said.

In the past consideration was being given to a system where the bottom team in the senior division would move to the intermediate division and the intermediate champion would be promoted to the senior division. Malone said it was discussed but when the Disciples—one of the teams that had been around from the 70s—finished last in the senior division, being a past league champion they did not return. During the same period, league champs Run It Red asked to remain in the division to defend its title but other managers wanted to play them for bragging rights.

“We have to look into that because that’s where I think competition is and there will be interest in the league,” Malone said.
