—The Hurricanes used the aged and the sick to take control of the BVI Amateur Softball Association Arnold “Foxy” Barronville league over the weekend.

A night after 58-year old veteran Roy “Panhandle” Hill—the league’s oldest player— who has played with and faced the biggest names in BVI softball beat down the Blue Wings on Friday night, Neville “Sheep” Smith crawled out of his sick bed with the flu to end the Reds’ romp over lesser opponents.

Hill gave up two first inning runs before settling down to shut out the Blue Wings the rest of the way, as Juan Hatchett gave them the lead for good in the fourth inning, with a two run pinch hit homer, en route to a 9-2 victory.

Their runs came with 6 hits, 1 error and 4 left on base. The Blue Wings had 2 runs off 6 hits, 4 errors and 3 left stranded. Jason “Mad” Fonseca was tagged with the loss in relief of Darwin “Chicken” Scatliffe. Kye Rymer and former Byrds player Sylvester “Booker” Johnson, had one hits in three at bats respectively for the Hurricanes, with 4 runs scored and 2 RBIs each. Alfred Maduro and Raymond “Mahasa” Mercer each had a hit in tree at bats for the Blue Wings. Maduro scored a run and drove on one while Mercer had a run batted in.

In Saturday night’s nightcap, Smith mowed down the previously unbeaten Reds—who were coming off a record 10-homer game and 17 first inning runs against the Dodgers—with a three hit shutout in a 5-0 victory.  Smith fanned 11 Reds’ batsmen in the game where Reynold “Bushman” Corum made his Reds debut and took the loss. The ‘Caines’ cleanup hitter George “Showadda” Burrows had two hits in three trips to the plate, to go with 2 RBIs. Cedric Smith had one hit in two at bats and one run batted in for the ‘Caines who improved to 5-1.

The Hurrucanes had 5 runs, 6 hits, 2 errors and 5 left on base. The Reds came up with 0 runs, 3 hits, 1 error and 5 runners stranded. Kevi Potter and Brock Creque had two of the Red’s three hits.

Young Talent’s Allen “Woodrow” Smith tossed the first shutout of the weekend—a 14 strikeout 2-hitter against the Latinos—during a 7-0 triumph. Young Talent’s runs came off 7 hits, 0 errors and 4 base runners stranded. The Latinos had 0 runs, 2 hits, 2 errors and 4 left on base. Kelvin Solomon took the loss for the Latinos.

Raphael Rabsatt had a homer among his 2 hits in 3 at bats for Young Talent. He also had a run batted in. Omar Jones homered in two trips to the dish, and had 3 RBIs. Ricky Bautista and Malcair Heredia had the Latinos’ two hits.

New comers Virgin Gorda All Stars used a 17-hit attack to pick up a 13-8 victory—their first—against the Dodgers, in a battle between unbeaten teams.   They committed 3 errors and stranded 7. The Dodgers had 6 hits, 5 errors and 11 left on base. Frank Quashie picked up the win in relief of Andrell Bailey. Lee Evans Jacobs was the All Stars top hitter with a 3-for-5 night. He scored two and drove in one. Kimani Stevens went 2-for-5, scored twice with 3 RBIs. Tom Chapman was the Dodgers’ top hitter with 2 hits in 4 at bats including a homer. He scored three times with three runs batted in. Josh Hudson collected a hit in three at bats, scored two and had 2 RBIs.
