TORTOLA—Young Guns avenged a loss to end the first round of BVI Amateur Volleyball Association play, with a four set victory over the Moorings’ Dream Team on Friday night at the Multipurpose Sports Complex in Road Town. It was the only game played as the women’s game scheduled was forfeited.
Young Guns pulled into a third place tie with the Dream Team as both sport a 3-3 record, following their 25-21-13-25, 25-19 and 25-23 triumph.
“In the first round, we were just feeling out the team. In the second round, we plan to take it up to another level and this is where it is right now,” explained Young Guns player-coach Neville Brathwaite.
Young Guns had the lead in the fourth set, lost it then fell behind before tying it again. Brathwaithe then called a time out, which he said was to let them sit, before asking if they were thinking what he was thinking. “I was thinking it was time to take the next step and finish it, especially when we reached to 21-21,” he recalled. “At that time, the game was only 0-0 and the game is going to four, so we needed to finish it.”
Dream Team’s Craig Glasgow said the referees killed the game and every time they made a move the same thing happened. “This isn’t a setback. This will just awaken us that we have to play harder and do what we have to do to win,” he pointed out. “We have to clamp down on our defense. We have to come together and realize we are a team and stick together no matter what. This is only half of the team. The others aren’t coming out and I don’t know why.”
Brathwaite said his team—a comprised of several under 17 players—is taking on a different attitude in the second half. The fear they had he noted is gone and they are not worrying about making mistakes and playing volleyball. They are coming up to the level, he noted.
The 2006 champions are already assured of a playoff spot—after becoming the first defending champions to miss them last year—and Brathwaite is predicting a rematch with reigning champs Terminators.
“At this point in time, I’m not just blurting out. Statistically, the championships have been Young Guns and Terminators,” he pointed out. “Last year, Young Guns were just sitting on the side. But, it will be Young Guns and Terminators this year. Young Guns are back.”
