TORTOLA—Young Guns opened the second half of the BVI Amateur Volleyball Association season Sunday, with a stirring comeback against the Seventh Day Adventist, on a night where five set thrillers abounded.
Trailing 9-2 in the fifth and deciding set of the tense game, Young Guns ran off seven unanswered points to tie the game at 9-9, before falling behind again, 12—10. They capitalized on mistakes then outscored the Seventh Day Adventist 5-1 for a 15-13 victory, to complete their thrilling seesaw, 23-25, 25-11, 22-25 and 25-23 triumph.
“This type of comeback definitely uplifts the team,” player-coach Neville Brathwaite said. “The young guys are excited about the win, we (older guys) are definitely excited about it and we are very impressed with what our younger guys are doing on the court. It wasn’t the older guys carrying the team. We had the young guys rotating in and out of the five sets.”
Seventh Day Adventist player-coach Zebalon McLean, said after they had a 9-2 lead, he did not expect his squad to lose. “Actually, I thought that if we had gotten to 10 points first, we would have traded points and won because of the lead we had, but we didn’t hold server tonight,” he explained. “Young Guns played well and even if we did not make the mistakes and they played well, they wouldn’t have caught us, but, it was a combination of their resiliency and out breakdown of play.”

Bratwaithe said the first half of the league was used to feel out the team and expose their young players, many of whom are under 17 and some have less than two years experience. The second round he said is a fight for a playoff spot. “We aren’t at full potential in my opinion, but we have matured quite a bit from the first round.” In the earlier female game, Up And Coming needed five sets to topple their teenage counterparts Termin’ x in another seesaw thriller, 14-25, 25-21, 11-25, 28-26 and 16-14.
