TORTOLA—The Moorings’ Dream Team concluded the first half of the BVI Amateur Volleyball Association with a four set Sunday night victory over the Young Guns at the Multipurpose Sports Complex.
The Dream Team walked off with a hard fought 26-24, 21-25, 25-17 and 25-20 triumph. Coach Edward Tyson wasn’t quite satisfied with his team’s play. “We didn’t have the kind of momentum that the guys came out with and they kind of laid back a little bit, because it was a young team,” he noted. “They built up the momentum close to the end and we should have built that momentum from the beginning. Once again, we under estimated Young Guns, but in the end, we beat them.”
Tyson said they can’t come out with that attitude when the second round of play begins. To be among the teams contending for the title, he said they have to tighten their defense and have better communication among the players. “We have to come together as a team and build our strength for when we meet (defending champs) Terminators and Jus Bless,” he said. “To me, Jus Bless is a warm up for Terminators.”
Norville Brathwaite said Young Guns as been using the first round to feel out the young Elmore Stoutt High School players. He said they have some players who have been with the team for two years and others between 13 and 15. “We are trying to get them into the mix and see if we can pull them along and actually have them take over the whole situation when it comes to Young Guns,” Brathwaite explained. “We want to keep that name going. We have been trying to teach them the value of the game, being sportsmanlike and knowing their positions on the court. As a team, once you know your position and play your position, and everybody else does the same, that’s how the team works.”
Now that the experimentation is over, Brathwaite said they have to step it up a notch as everyone thinks Young Guns is a walk over and they are finished. “We’ll let the action speak louder than words,” he stated.
In the women’s game, Raw Power secured a straight set 25-11, 25-11 and 25-11 victory over Up And Coming. Janelle Scatliffe and Pearline Scatliffe –no relation—had 20 and 15 points respectively as the top scorer. Katia Harrigan and Sheynelle Smith, had Up And Coming top scores with seven and eight points each
