TORTOLA—The British Virgin Islands Olympic Committee has selected two participants from a field of six recommended by its member federations and associations, to attend the Beijing Olympic Games Youth Camp during August, in China.
Sprinter Britney Wattley from athletics and Alec Anderson from sailing, we chosen as the representatives from the field that included: Squash player Joe Champan, Elsa Meyers of sailing and Chris Telemaque and Mekyla Phillips from soccer.
In October, the BVIOC asked its 10 members to submit names of one young male and female athletes for consideration to attend the camp, in which the BVI will participate for the third time, beginning with the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Four of the 10 members submitted the six nominations for consideration.
Wattley, 15, is a Leeward Island Jr. Championships 200 meters silver medallist. She is a member of the BVI national 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 meter relay squads and has helped the team to fourth place finishes at both the Carifta Games and the Central American and Caribbean Jr. Championships. Last year, she competed at the World Youth Championships in the Czech Republic and is working on qualifying for this year’s World Jr. Championships in Poland. “I also want to score the most points, win the Victrix Ludorum and help Carlisle House win the Elmore Stoutt High School sports day title,” she said. Wattley will also represent the BVI at next month’s Carifta Games in St. Kitts.
Anderson, 16, who attends Cedar School, just moved from the Laser 4.7 to the Laser Radial, took up sailing at seven. His ultimate goal is to compete in the London 2012 Olympic Games, and eventually give back to the sport when he retires from competition. He competed in 2007 the Optimist World Championships in Uruguay. He has also competed in North, Central and South America, as well as Europe and the Caribbean.
“I look forward to travelling the world, experiencing different cultures and continuing the pursuit of my dream,” Anderson said. He will be competing in Jensen Beach Fla., this weekend and Clear Water the following week, in different mid winter competitions.
