TORTOLA—The British Virgin Islands Olympic Committee outlined a series of plans towards professionalizing the organization during a Tuesday press conference at its head quarters.
Second vice president Ephraim Penn, has just completed a Masters of sports management course and has outlined areas of priorities through 2008 and beyond next year. Penn noted that during the organization’s 2006 elections, Rey O’Neal, who has been the president of the organization, announced he would not be seeking re-election at the end of his term in 2008. Penn said these are some big gap to fill since O’Neal has been a founding member of the committee.
“To fill that gap, you can’t continue running the organization as it is, since he was the brain thrust,” Penn noted. “He was everything to the organization and did a tremendous job.”
Penn said following a visit from Olympic Solidarity officials among other things, the mandated elections, and a revision of the constitution was undertaken and the process is nearing completion. “Although there were good relations with the member federations, there was a lack of communication with them and getting timely information to them,” Penn noted. “There was not much information flowing to the public either. Those were key weaknesses we had to address. We held a sports administration course and met will all the federations and presented the new image the BVIOC wants to project.”
Penn said some of the things that have been done include:
• Creating a new administrative structure based on instructions provided by Olympic Solidarity.
• Promoting Olympism in the territory. Penn said asking the man on the street what the BVIOC does, one will get different answers. “Although we have been around and been successful, our roles are not clear to the public,” he said.
A series of priority areas have been identified to be completed between the end of the year and 2008, Penn noted. He said the committee will be hiring office staff. He said between Nov 19-22, the executive director of the Netherlands Olympic Committee will visit the territory, to assist the BVIOC in professionalizing the organization.
Officials also noted that they have received nominations for the Aug 5-18, Olympic Youth Camp in Beijing, China. Four member federations have nominated six persons of which one boy and one girl will be selected to represent the territory at the camp. Athletics and squash nominated one person each; soccer and sailing two each.
The BVIOC is introducing a Sportsman/sportswoman of the year award in the junior. and senior divisions, which will be announced early next year. During the year, member federations were requested to name players of the week during their seasons and keep statistical data on them. Nominations for the award will be done in the coming weeks.
