ATHENS, Greece—The four U.S. and British Virgin Islands teenagers attending the Aug 11-26 Olympic Youth Camp in Gramatickos, Greece, will visit the Olympic Games Village today.
USVI’s participants Sasha Gumbs and Mohamid Abiff and their BVI counterparts Leniece Lewis and Bryshaun Scatliffe, will get to meet the athletes on their delegations, tour living quarters and team offices and the Olympic Games Village. The V. I. participants are among representatives from 200 other countries which have sent two youths.
“At the youth camp, you learn a lot about the Olympic Games and how special it really is and the different aspects of the games besides the sporting events,” explained Josh Laban who attended the camp in at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and competed in Thursday’s 50 meter freestyle where he broke the U.S. Virgin Islands national record. “The Olympic Games is a celebration of culture, arts and humanity.”
During their stay, the youth campers are scheduled to participate in a number of workshops related to the Olympic Truce, environment, painting, dancing and music, all of which are connected with the Olympic spirit. They will also participate in beach parties and a cultural exchange night, where they will get to brag about and display numerous items from their respective countries.
Another special part of the Olympic Youth Camp will be a ‘Walk in Athens Day’ where they will be given the opportunity to visit the Olympic City in its heart along with museums and important sites that will give them a picture of the history and culture of the city.
Outside of Athens, the campers are to visit the historical site of Ancient Olympia, the International Olympic Academy, the Coubertin Cove and Museum—Pierre deCouberin is the founder of the modern Olympic Games—and they will participate in a workshop focusing on the Olympic Movement, in order to become ambassadors to the Olympic Movement and their countries. During their time outside Athens, they will also go on a cruise to visit Sepstes, one of the most famous islands in Greece. Due to the cultural and educational nature of the camp, the representatives will visit archeological sites and museums regarding the ancient and modern history of Greece.
