NCAA Grants Kleon Penn Another Year
TORTOLA—British Virgin Islands hoopster Kleon Penn, a 6-11 center at McNeese State, has been ruled eligible to play this coming basketball season for the Cowboys.
Penn, of Old Plantation, Tortola, petitioned the NCAA earlier this year after the end of the 2007-08 season. There had been some question about his eligibility for the 2008-09 season, because he played a year for the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College Stingrays, but Bridget Martin, the university’s associate athletic director and director of compliance, said, in a media release, “McNeese State University has determined that men’s basketball student-athlete Kleon Penn meets the NCAA’s eligibility requirements for intercollegiate competition for the 2008-2009 academic year.”

TORTOLA—For almost three quarters of Saturday night’s championship game at the Multipurpose Sports Complex in Road Town before the largest crowd this season, Young Legs seemed poised to join the Virgin Gorda Jr. Mystics and Ghetto Mix, in complete and reverse sweeps of the Jr. and intermediate divisions. The East’s Douron Phillips had other ideas. The senior division championship MVP, scored 13 of his game high 22 points in the second half, when the East returned to their running game, turning a two point deficit into a 10 point lead from which Young Legs would never recover. The East went on to a convincing, 78-66 victory. Phillips, who stuffed his final two points for a dunk off a turnover and fast break as teammates watched—also pulled nine rebounds. Damien Ottley—who walked off with the sportsmanship award—settled for a 14 point 11 rebounds double, double. Dwayne “Kobo” Penn pulled 10 rebounds and added seven points before cutting down the nets.

East Avenges Loss With, 72-71, Win Over Guns
TORTOLA—The East took control of the game for the first time with 4 minutes and 24 seconds left in the first quarter, then David “Bolo” Lettsome sealed it in the fourth quarter after making two free throws with 18.2 seconds left for a thrilling 72-71, Saturday night victory at the Multipurpose Sports Complex in Road Town, avenging a 91-74 loss in their first encounter. But, the Guns had several chances to steal the game under the basket after Lettsome scored, but turnovers cost them the game. “This was a really exciting game and good coaching by our coaching staff,” said the East’s coach Verne “Bego” Turnbull. “We made some turnovers but, coming down the stretch, we played a lot of defense and showed them we were willing to play under this pressure."
