Basketball Season Opener Set For Saturday

TORTOLA—The BVI Basketball Federation will open its 2008 league on Saturday afternoon at the Multipurpose Sports Complex in Road Town, featuring three games. Activities are slated to begin with a parade of teams from the Elmore Stoutt High School at 4:30 p.m., and teams are to line up by 4 p.m. for the parade to the Multipurpose Sports Complex for the 5 p.m. opening ceremonies. Legends to be Featured in All Stars Weekend

TORTOLA—The British Virgin Islands Softball Association has invited several of its softball legends living in St. Thomas, St. John and Tortola, to participate in its legends All Stars Game on Saturday, as a part All Star weekend events. Association president Neville "Sheep" Smith said All Stars weekend will be a family event and games they will enjoy. “One of the things fans will really see, are the people who contributed to the development of the sport in the BVI,” he said. “In a sense, it’s time to pay respect to the older players and appreciating what we have. We had a number of players who are coming and I want people to see who they are.”

85 Expected for BVI Dinghy Championships

TORTOLA—Officials are expecting over 80 participants from as near as the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto and as far as Florida, for the May 10-11, BVI Dinghy Championships, scheduled for the Sir Francis Drakes Channel. There are seven dinghy classes for all ages and sailing will be all day on Saturday with the prize giving at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, said Club Manager of the Royal BVI Yacht Club. “This event is opened to children from seven to 77,” Paul said. “All they have to do to participate is to be sailing a dinghy. Robbie Hirst is supposed to be participating in the Laser Class so he’ll be giving Alec Anderson a little bit competition, before his training period for Jr. Worlds.”

Fighting Illini Looking at Sprinter Ashley Kelley

TORTOLA—The University of Illinois Fighting Illini is avidly recruiting British Virgin Islands sprinter and World Jr. Championships 200 meters qualifier Ashley Kelly, who returned from visiting the school on Sunday, where she spent four days on a recruiting trip. Kelly who turned 17 a day after the Carifta Games where she qualified for the July 8-13, World Jr. Championships in Poland, has run seasons best in the 100, 200 and 400 meters and contributed a leg to the territory’s 4 x 400 meter national record setting squad. So far this season, Kelly has posted career best times of 12.21 and 56.24 in the 100 and 400 meters and came within .03 of her 200 meters best after running 24.64.

'Sheep' Shuts Down Young Talent on One Hitter

TORTOLA—Since the opening of the BVI Softball Association league, May 4 had been circled on the calendar of the league’s top pitchers, Hurricanes’ Neville “Sheep” Smith and Young Talent’s Allen “Woodrow” Smith, following Young Talent’s 3-1 opening day victory. “It was a game that in my mind was a must win for the Hurricanes,” manager Arnold Lettsome said. “These are the kind of games you must win heading towards the playoffs, so that you can go with the confidence that you can beat the other team. You don’t want them to beat you so close to the playoffs to give them that confidence.”
