Two Selected For Olympic Youth Camp

TORTOLA—The British Virgin Islands Olympic Committee has selected two participants from a field of six recommended by its member federations and associations, to attend the Beijing Olympic Games Youth Camp during August, in China. Sprinter Britney Wattley from athletics and Alec Anderson from sailing, we chosen as the representatives from the field that included: Squash player Joe Champan, Elsa Meyers of sailing and Chris Telemaque and Mekyla Phillips from soccer. In October, the BVIOC asked its 10 members to submit names of one young male and female athletes for consideration to attend the camp, in which the BVI will participate for the third time, beginning with the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Four of the 10 members submitted the six nominations for consideration.

BVIOC Holding Annual General Meeting
TORTOLA—The British Virgin Islands Olympic Committee will mark its first anniversary since elections in Dec 2006, with a general assembly today, where the executive body will report on its activities over the past year. The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the BVIOC offices in the Road Reef Plaza. Besides the various reports, a new constitution which was approved by the International Olympic Committee on Nov 1, is up for ratification by its 10 members.

TORTOLA—The British Virgin Islands Olympic Committee completed its first steps towards professionalization with a Nov 19-22 visit by the Netherland Antilles Olympic Committee Executive Director Remco Tevreden. While in the BVI, Tevreden met with BVIOC executive committee, members of the BVIOC, Shelia Bratwaithe, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the acting director of the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, Patrick Harrigan. “All in all, I’m very pleased with the level of exchange of information that we received,” BVIOC 2nd vice president Ephraim Penn who spearheaded the initiative said.

Olympic Sports Asess Plans For Upcoming Games

TORTOLA—Six of 10 members were on hand last night when British Virgin Islands Olympic Committee officials had its first consultation meeting to prepare for the upcoming series of games, starting with the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
BVIOC 2nd vice president Ephraim Penn who chaired the meeting, said while the turnout was smaller than expected, the members present were very informative while assessing their status and their plans for upcoming competitions. “It was a very interactive meeting and I think we gained a lot of knowledge from the associations as to where they are,” Penn said of the meeting that attracted representatives from, Volleyball, Squash, Cycling, Athletics, Football and Sailing.

BVIOC Prepping Members for Upcoming Games
TORTOLA—The British Virgin Islands Olympic Committee has appointed a select group to meet with member federations and association at its headquarters in the Road Reef Plaza at 5:30 p.m. today, to begin preparing for upcoming games. BVIOC 2nd Vice President Ephraim Penn said the purpose of the meeting is to bring all the associations together and apprise them of the upcoming games in which the BVI will be participating in.
