Sprinters Eliminated in CYG 100 Meters
TORTOLA—British Virgin Islanders sprinters Ramos Pemberton and Naheem Stevens made their respective debuts in the 3rd Commonwealth Youth Games 100 meters dash on Tuesday in Pune, India, but did not advance from the rounds. Pemberton, an Elmore Stoutt High School student, was fifth in his heat in 11.39 seconds, in the event where the first four finishers and the next four fastest times advanced to the semifinals.

BVI Debuts In Commonwealth Youth Games

TORTOLA—The British Virgin Islands made its Commonwealth Youth Games debut during a spectacular opening ceremony Saturday, hailing the third edition of the games in Pune, India, that targets athletes 18 years and under. Despite the fabulous start to the games that were first held in 2000, there was confusion with scheduling that saw some teams including the BVI being affected. During a Saturday afternoon technical meeting, officials were told that no boys Tennis matches would be played, only girls, a change in the original schedule that had matches scheduled for today.

Three Athletes For CYG in India

TORTOLA--On Wednesday, three athletes from three different schools on Tortola and Virgin Gorda, will depart to represent the British Virgin Islands at the 3rd Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India. The upcoming games for athletes 18 and under which has nine sports and targets 2000 athletes from 71 countries, will run from Oct 12-18. The BVI’s team which is making its inaugural trek to the games that were first held in Glasgow, Scotland in 2000, with 14 countries attending, will depart for Pune on Wednesday. The game’s third edition marks the first time all members of the Commonwealth will attend, after 24 countries participated in the second edition held in Bendigo, Australia.

Glasgow Gets BVI Support for 2014 Bid

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka—The British Virgin Islands’ support counted towards Glasgow, Scotland’s winning bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games, which was announced during the Commonwealth Games Federation General Assembly that wrapped up in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on Friday evening. Glasgow, who was bidding with Abuja, Nigeria for the right to host the games, received support from 66% of the 71 member body, with a 47-24, advantage over the African state. Unlike the Olympic Games where the host is determined by the 119 IOC members, each Commonwealth Games member has one vote in determining which city gets to host the games. During its Oct 30 executive committee meeting, the BVI Olympic Committee threw its support behind Glasgow’s bid.

Halifax Pulls out of Commonwealth Games
TORTOLA—Less than two weeks after making its pitch to the BVI Olympic Committee and its members for support in hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games, bid city candidate Halifax, Canada, withdrew its bid on Thursday, after the Province of Nova Scotia and the Halifax Regional Municipality, withdrew their support of the bid.
