TORTOLA—Sports always provide numerous opportunities for surprises, buzzer beaters, last innings heroics and even fantastic finishes. And for the Royal BVI Yacht Club, it came down to Saturday’s season ending Commodore’s race to decide its Helmsman of the Yea winner as there was an eight-way tie heading into the last race, after eight different winners had won club races throughout the season.

With four of the eight in the race, it was still anybody’s race for the covered award. When the last corrected time calculation was made, the award went to Kevin Rowlette. “Yes, I was quite surprised,” Rowlette said. “I had taken a three year break from sailing and only returned three months ago, but have won the last three club races and we had a good little run.

TORTOLA—The Royal BVI Yacht Club celebrated its 35th anniversary of existence on Saturday night, with a function hosted at Government House, hosted by Governor David Pearey. Clair Burke—the first woman to be appointed Commodore—said it was a wonderful event. “We had lots of our current members, past members and guests and it has been really, really good,” she said. “Government House is a very good location and we are thankful to the Governor for allowing us to have this event here tonight and it has been a really, really nice night.”

'Chef' Anderson Snatches Nannay Cay Nations Cup
TORTOLA—On Saturday night, Alec Anderson played the role of chef, serving up roast beef at Government House, during the Royal BVI Yacht Club’s 35th anniversary dinner. By Sunday afternoon, Anderson and his bMobile/LIME crew had snatched the Nanny Cay Nations Cup crown from St. Thomas Olympic silver medalist Peter Holmberg, by registering seven bullets in 12 races and finishing no lower than third. However, the Holmbergs' regatta was marred by a costly error in race seven when they sailed around the wrong windward mark with a comfortable lead.

TORTOLA—Light windy conditions did not affect Donte Hodge, a 15 year old St. Georges High School student sailing in the Optimist Class of the weekend Royal BVI Yacht Club 3rd annual Back to School Regatta.
Hodge posted 10 bullets for a 13 points margin of victory over Jason Putley who finished with 23 points. “It took a lot of concentration, small movements and I noticed the other sailors weren’t concentrating, so I just concentrated more, had the boat speed and I just dominated,” he explained. “This regatta is a good idea and I think more people should be involved because it’s a good event and a lot of fun. I think more schools should definitely be involved.”

VI Sailors Invited to US Youth Championships

TORTOLA—A U.S. and British Virgin Islands sailor has been invited to the June 26-July 1 U.S. Youth Sailing Championships in San Francisco, Calif. St. Thomas’ Rian Baruther and Tortola’s Alec Anderson are among 36 of the 61 applicants accepted so far and invited to participate in the Club 420 championships. In February, Baruther and Anderson placed ninth in the mid winter championships held in Florida. Anderson said when they went to Florida, he did not have much experience with the boat but Baruther had and it was enough to help them. “It’s a really fun two person boat and we wanted to compete in some other regattas and the people we were staying with suggested we try for the U.S. Youth Championships which is a good regatta,” Anderson explained.
