RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil—Kevin Fahie became the first of two British Virgin Islands male athletes to see action in the 15th Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Wednesday, ahead of today’s track and field off day. Action resumes on Friday and Keita Cline will Triple Jump during Saturday’s last day of competition. Female athletes Tahesia Harrigan, Dominique Maloney and Leniece Lewis, wrapped up competition on Tuesday night.
Fahie though, was happy with his reaction in yesterday’s 200 meters and his curve running, before things fell apart after that. He had a non advancing time off 22.39 seconds, good for seventh place in his heat. “After coming off the curve, I really didn’t have anything else to go with everybody else,” Fahie said. “I didn’t meet my expectations. It was a pretty disappointing day for me.”
Fahie considers this his last race of the season, saying he wants to get ready to run the 400 meters next year. He said his aim would be to get fit and get his body in condition for the next season. “I think it has to do more with competition and training because this is only my fourth open competition this year, including the two races I ran in college, then in El Salvador and this being my fourth,” Fahie explained of his 2007 season of running. “I think a lot of it has to do with getting in race shape.”
He said that it’s difficult coming to a major competition like this, not being in race shape, described his year as a very eventful year. “If I was to shut it down here, at least I’ll be injury free,” he said. “And that gives me something positive to look forward to for next season.”
