TORTOLA—The top seeds in the Nagico National Tennis Championships being played at the Tortola Sports Club in Pasea, will begin play today and Wednesday, after finding out who their opponents are, following a series of first round matches that began on Sunday afternoon.
Defending champion Sheldon Walters will face Lenroy Quashie, who turned back Peter Morris during a straight set 6-3, 6-3 opening victory. Second seeded Percy Rhoden, will take on Curtis Davis who advanced by default against Frandi Martin.
“We’ve had some good high quality Tennis in the early rounds,” noted Tortola Sports Club Tennis Captain Rachel Johnson. “The higher seeded players will be getting in action soon. We have about 18 juniors playing as well, along 40-50 other men and women’s players. It’s a good opportunity for the junior players to see a higher level of tennis, as they are the future of the sport in the BVI.”
Dean Fonseca, one of the junior players, had a straight set 6-0 and 6-1 triumph over Anthony Palmer. William Sinko beat Terence Gumbs, also in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3 and will face Ken Adamson. John Rochester got past Keith Thomas, 6-3 and 6-4. He will now face Dion Anselm, one of the favorites. Greg Boyd stopped James Warburton, 6-3, 6-4, while Humphrey Leue overpowered John Cline, 7-5 and 6-1.
