TORTOLA—Less than two weeks after making its pitch to the BVI Olympic Committee and its members for support in hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games, bid city candidate Halifax, Canada, withdrew its bid on Thursday, after the Province of Nova Scotia and the Halifax Regional Municipality, withdrew their support of the bid.
Halifax 2014 CEO Scott Logan and International Relations Officer Kate Randall, made a presentation to the BVI Olympic Committee along with its member federations and associations on February 26.
“I was taken quite by surprise when I got an email alert from GamesBids.com breaking the news on Thursday morning, something which was later confirmed by Halifax 2014, in the afternoon,” BVI Olympic Committee Secretary General, Dean Greenaway stated. “Their recent visit was one of our agenda items in our upcoming meeting on March 14. We are disappointed with this development, which now leaves Glasgow, Scotland and Abuja, Nigeria in the race.”
Officials from Glasgow presented their bid to the BVI Olympic Committee, during a mid January visit. The committee has not received any information on a possible visit from Nigeria.
The 2014 Commonwealth Games city will be announced on November 9, during the Commonwealth Games Federation General Assembly, in Sri Lanka.
