TORTOLA—The British Virgin Islands Athletics Association launched its Athletes of the Week Program during Saturday’s first in a series of development meets.
In its inaugural year the BVIAA’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. The BVIAA names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the BVIOC website. The association will recognize its athletes in the Age Group, Jr. and Sr. Divisions throughout the season.
Bagging the associations first Athletes of the Week honors are:
Sr. Male: Mark Kendall, who won the 150 meters in 16.58 seconds
Sr. Female: Dominique Maloney. Dominique recorded a personal best 1 minute, 35.70 seconds to win her division and placed second overall.
Jr. Female: Samantha John. Samantha had a wire to wire victory in the 600 meters with a personal best of 1 minute, 35.42 seconds, to hold off Dominique Maloney.
Jr. Male: Khiry Creque: Khiry made his 600 meters debut and had the best finish of BVI athletes after combing the times from both heats, edging Aliston “Allie” Blyden by .02 seconds, after covering the lap and a half of the track in 1 minute, 29.90 seconds.
Age Group Female: Nelda Huggins. She out distanced her opponents to win the 150 meters in 20.38 seconds.
Age Group Male: Jose Wheatley was victorious in the 150 meters in 22.45 seconds.
