TORTOLA—The BVI Softball Association Youth and Jr. League is set to begin with 16 teams from Tortola and Virgin Gorda on Saturday, with an opening ceremony on the Old Recreation Grounds starting at 10 a.m.
Preceding the ceremony, there will be a March Pass of teams starting at 9:30 a.m. from the entrance of the Elmore Stoutt High School. From the school, the March Pass will go directly to the Old Recreation Grounds for the opening ceremonies.
Among the guests attending the ceremony, will be International Softball Federation Secretary General, Andrew Loechner, who will be on hand for the launching of the league and the association’s red carpet dinner later in the evening.
During Saturday’s softball awards banquet at the Moorings, president Neville “Sheep” Smith said awards for the 2007 and 2008 leagues will be presented, as well as passing out other honors. This event is a fundraiser for the association and tickets cost $50 per person.
“This will be a formal event—an event for players, fans and anyone interested in softball,” Smith said. “I think this will be one of the first red carpet events for a sporting organization in the BVI. This should be a night to remember. We are setting a trend and we hope other associations would try to do the same.”
On Thursday, starting at 6:00 p.m., uniforms will be distributed to at Deloitte offices. Catcher’s mitts and other required equipment will also be available for collection at that time.
