TORTOLA—Coach Vincent “Nabu” Samuels got what he called a “complete game victory” when his Under 23 Team came from behind to beat GT Massive, 3-2, on Sunday night in their Virgin Gorda Soccer league match.
GT Massive constructed a 2-0 halftime advantage after Ron Parris scored 32 minutes in on a penalty kick. Eight minutes later, Andrew King scored what turned out to be their last goal.
Under 23s Odeane Johnson cut the deficit to 2-1, after scoring from a penalty kick four minutes into the second half. Andrew Norford pulled the Under 23 Team even in the 69th minute, before Lee Evans Jacobs scored the game winner two minutes later.
“I think my team played with a lot of resilience, they played with a lot of heart and they moved the ball a lot. I was truly impressed with the level of play,”
Samuel said. “We turned things on in the second half to come from two down to win 3-2, and, it was really a concerted team effort. They played quality football, moved the ball a lot and I could not even point out one individual to give the MVP. They put their hands and hearts together and produced a really good game.”
Defending champs Rangers bounced from last week’s shock loss to the Hairoun, behind a quarter of goals from Rohan “Chi Chi” Lennon.
Lennon opened the Rangers’ scoring nine minutes into the game as they hanged on to a 1-0 lead over a surprisingly stubborn Sugar Boys crew. But, Sugar Boys’ defense fell apart after the break. Seven minutes into the second half, captain Avondale “Avon” Williams made it 2-0. The Lennon continued his scoring binge with goals in the 54th, 66th and 75th minutes of play.
“We tried to put last week’s lost behind and tried to improve the way we play this week which we did and came out victorious,” noted Williams. “Last week we had a break down because one of our players got a red card and was thrown off the field. We made some adjustments in this game and had more players than we did last week to make substitutions and were more comfortable.”
With a week off, Williams said they will be prepping for an upcoming game with Hairoun Starts and the Under 23 Team. “We have to put our best foot forward in order to win those two games so that we can retain the league title,” he said.
