Players Invited to National Team Tryouts

TORTOLA—After hitting rock bottom two years ago with the worst showing in its 31 year history of international competition following an eight year hiatus, the British Virgin Islands Softball Association is casting an eye towards improving its lot in the hemisphere.

Just shy of 2-years since the national team’s meltdown during the VII Pan American Softball Championships in Mexico, where they became the first team to go through the tournament without scoring a run in nine games and were outscored by a combined 64-0, score, the association has invited male and female players to a 6 p.m. meeting today, to discuss plans for national team selections.

In 1987, BVI softball was at its height, when they played Cuba in the bronze medal game at the Pan American Games in Indianapolis, Ind., suffering a narrow 4-3 loss. Since then, the sport has gone on a steady decline.

Association president Neville “Sheep” Smith—who has endured the highs and lows— has also assured it will not be business as usual, when selecting a national team. “Players must show up for tryouts,” he warned “We are giving everybody an opportunity and a fair chance to participate in the process.”

Following a general meeting held last week, the association has identified several players and invited them to tonight’s meeting discussing tryouts for the 2009 women and male national team.

The association is eying fielding male and female teams in the July 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games, scheduled for Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. To get to that point, they must attend and men’s qualifying tournament in the Dominican Republic during the first week of June, while a women’s qualifier is scheduled for Puerto Rico, during the third week in June.
