TORTOLA—An opening day record equaling 176 participants, ranging from three to 67 years old, in all shapes, sizes and fitness levels, toed the line Saturday to kick off the 13th season of the Highland Spring College Classic Series leg on Tortola.

By the time the clock was stopped to begin recording times, defending champions Steven Asson and Darwn Peters, emerged as overall winners in the race that attracted several new and returning race veterans.

“The time I ran today was the same time I ran last year, which was a fast time,” Asson said after covering the 2-mile loop in 11 minutes and 31.42 seconds. “I kept my same rhythm and the guys that were with me fell off the pace less than half mile into the race. The only place I made a move was after I made the turn, over the first quarter mile into the second mile. I moved hard so that if anyone was thinking of anything, they too, had to run very hard.”

Asson, who had been suffering from a back problem, said he was surprised by the time. His injury was in the back of his mind he said and felt a slight discomfort but pushed through it. “When I saw the time, I said to myself, I can break the course record time,” he said referring to Lyndell Roberts’ mark of 10:45.3 from 1997.

Peters, who admitted she had not done her usual preparations, said it was a struggle to cover the two-mile course in 14 minutes and 59.39 seconds—just 44 seconds ahead of Kay Reddy.

“I knew I’m not going to be here for the next race so I was thinking gees, I have to win this one today,” Peters said. “But, I was kind of worried because I had taken a month and a half off without training, so I just went out and ran. I tried to look ahead, keep running and push my pace. I picked up the pace when I got to the one mile mark because when I rounded the mark, I saw that there were some women too close to me,” she noted. “From about a half mile away, I picked up the pace again and kept moving forward.”

Race director Stephanie Russ Penn, said she could not have been happier to have 176 entries. “It was an excellent turnout and everyone came out excited and ready to go,” she recounted. “It’s looking like its going to pan out to be a very exciting series and I’m looking forward to see what comes out of all the categories. It was a great beginning and I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.”
