TORTOLA—Lee Evans Jacobs scored a double hat trick as the BVI Under 23 team whipped the Sugar Boys, 9-3, during Sunday’s night’s final Virgin Gorda Soccer League match.
Evans, who won the MVP award and helped the Virgin Gorda Jr. Mystics to their fourth straight BVI Basketball Federation title and has been included on the BVI’s team that will compete against Barbados and St. Kitts in the Digicel Caribbean Championships, had goals in the 7th 8th 18th 37th, 75th and 77th minutes of play.
“This is the first time I’ve ever scored this amount of goals,” Evans said. “I noticed the players were arguing a lot and getting frustrated, which made it easier for me to get the ball, which was more opened, because no one wanted to pass the ball to each other."
Andrell Bailey added goals in the12 th and 31st frames, while the Sugar Boys contributed an own goal. Jason Grant and Leslie Ambrose scored for the Sugar Boys.
Under 23 captain Richie Morton said like his team, the Sugar Boys, were short handed as well. “Some of our players from Tortola did not come up because of the weather so we had players who don’t normally play,” he noted. “Like the Spice Boys, we were short handed too. Last year they beat us badly so this year we returned the favor.”
Sugar Boys’ Carlos James said they were missing four of their Tortola players who did not travel because they were on the BVI national team that left for St. Kitts on Monday.
GT Massive and the Wolues played to a 1-1 tie in the first game. “We did not expect that kind of game from the Wolues,” said Ron Parris, whose team got an equalizer from Roiston Frazer 34 minutes into the game. “We thought it would have been a walk over for us, but they played very well.”
Wolues’ Mark Savage, who scored from a corner kick in the 22nd minute, said both teams played well. “There were opportunities for my team but it came out in a tie and it was a good game overall as both teams walked away with a point,” he noted. “We made some defensive blunders that allowed them to equalize the game. But, we have to correct that for our next game on Sunday and that’s what we plan to do as we look forward to winning upcoming games.”
