TORTOLA—There was a controversial end to one of Sunday’s matches in the Virgin Gorda Football Association league, when Lucian Stars walked off the field after the Under 23 Team came back to tie the game at 3-3, based on the final judgment of the referee.
Under 23 Team coach Vincent “Nabu” Samuel said it was a tight game with the score tied at 1-1, early on, but the Lucian Stars had constructed a 3-1 lead by half time. Samuel said his team seized the momentum in the second half coming up with two goals to knot the game at 3-3.
“But when we equalized with the third goal, the Lucian Stars were not happy with the way the goal was scored and they decided to walk off the field,” Samuel noted. “The goal was scored off a corner kick. The goalkeeper was off the field when the referee called the play. The corner came cross and scored, but I did not have the privilege to see the play.”
No one from the Lucian Stars commented on the outcome of the game. Bradley Henry scored all three goals for the Lucian Stars while Lee Evans Jacobs had two and Odane Johnson scored the other.
In the second game, the Sugar Boys blanked the GT Massive, 2-0, on goals by mid fielder Clifton James and striker Duane Ross.
Sugar Boys’ captain Alex Green, said they dominated the game from the midfield. “They put some pressure on us in the second half, yes, but we managed to see it through,” he said. “We used our experience and skill to win the game.”
With the line up assembled, Green said his team is optimistic of their chances in the league. He said they’ll take each game as they come and see what happens. When asked about defending champs Rangers who has dominated the league, Green said they have a stronger team than last year.
“We know Rangers is a strong team, but we are hoping to pull off a big one against them,” he said.
