TORTOLA—Facing a must win game Friday in the BVI Softball Association Arnold “Foxy” Barronville league championships series, the Lady Braves increased their run total each inning, finally batting around in the third to score their first 13 runs and pounded the Crushers, 15-5, and avoided being swept by the team looking for its fourth title in five years.
“Being the pitcher tonight, I had to make sure that I got the pitches in and rely on the field to get the outs out,” explained Lady Braves’ winning hurler Perline Scatliffe.
“I believe in the first two games because we were making errors, I wasn’t too confident in the fielding. But, after I saw them fielding the ball and with the few hits the Crushers had, I got a little more confident so I started to pitch a little bit more.”
Miranda Marie and Carlene Scatliffe had two hits in four at bats for the Lady Braves respectively and each scored twice. Marie had 3 RBIs and Scatliffe two.
Crushers’ Kathleen Fahie who relieved loser Alya Smith in the fourth, went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in.
Young Talent’s Allen “Woodrow” Smith settled for a one-hitter while fanning 13 after pitching 4⅔ innings of no-hit ball, during a 5-1 complete game victory over the Hurricanes, that gave his squad a 2-1 advantage. Roy “Panhandle” Hill who was relieved by Neville “Sheep” Smith in the third, took the loss. Neville struck out six in his turn on the mound.
“How the series is going, we have to stay ahead of the game because these are two good teams at it and we can’t afford to let them get the upper hand on us,” Smith said. “Sheep is no easy picking and we still ahead of the game. I’ll miss the next game, but, if we pull it out, it’s better for me. I had to pitch hard tonight to get this win, so at least could get a draw before the upcoming break, so we can come back and work it out after that.”
Jamal “Lefty” Allen’s lone hit in two at bats, was a two run homer in the second. Natheson Thomas also homered, scored and drove in a run. Rafael Rabsatt finished 2-for-3 and scored once.
“We have to score runs and stay focused,” coach Terry Chinnery said of trying to take a 3-1 advantage. “We have to overcome any problems and make them stand up.”
