The Crushers had three big innings where they scored at least four runs. They batted around in the fourth and sixth respectively—scoring four and seven runs—after scoring four in the third, to take and early 10-3 lead. The Lady Braves batted around in the sixth and scored six runs, to pull within 17-12.
Felicia “Big Train” Wattley relieved Kathleen Fahie in the fifth to collect the win, while Adina “Sugar Bowl” Nibbs—who won the title last year with the Warriors—took the loss.
Vashel Davies had three hits in five at bats as the Crushers’ leading hitter. She scored twice. Gertrude Thomas and Shakira Skelton were 2-for-5 and 2-for-4 respectively. Each scored four runs and had 3 RBIs.
Laura Issac, Kishma Payne and Nibbs, had two hits each for the Lady Braves. Issac scored three times while Payne and Nibbs scored twice. Issac and Nibbs each drove in a run, while Payne knocked in three.
In the men’s contest, after tying the game at 6-6 in the top of the sixth, the Hurricanes capitalized on three Young Talent’s errors to score four runs in the top of the seventh, during a 10-6 victory, that leveled the series at 1-1, after they lost the opener 10-2.
“I had no doubt that we were going to win this game,” Hurricanes manager Arnold Lettsome said. “It has been like this all season. We lost the first game of the season (to them) and we came back. Last year, we lost the first game of the championship series and we came back, so I have that confidence in the guys.”
Lettsome said his starter Roy “Panhandle” Hill was a bit shaky. While his pitches weren’t working, he kept them close enough until his ace Neville “Sheep” Smith came in to close it out.
Young Talent’s coach Terry Chinnery, said his team made a few errors and the ‘Canes made some adjustments to his ace, Allen “Woodrow” Smith.
“On Friday, we have to make Sheep throw strikes. We cannot go after his bad pitches,” he said. “Once he throw strikes, we will hit him. But, we have to make him pitch in the strike zone.”
‘Canes’ George Burrows was the top hitter with three hits in four at bats. He scored three times and had a run batted in. Juan Hatchett was 2-for-4 with a run scored and 2 RBIs.
Jacoy Percival and Jeremy Penn were Young Talent’s leading hitters with two hits in three at bats respectively. Percival scored twice. Penn scored a run and drove in one.
