Young Talent Beats 'Canes, 10-2, in Opener

TORTOLA—Allen “Woodrow” Smith scattered six hits, hit two triples and Young Talent used the long ball to cut the Hurricanes’ winds in the opener of the BVI Softball Association Arnold “Foxy” Barronville league best of seven championship series early Saturday morning.

Smith fanned 11 during the 10-2 victory, where Young Talent opened their scoring with a four run second and closed it with a four run seventh—capped by Jeremy “Chicken” Penn’s towering blast to dead center off Hurricanes’ ace Neville “Sheep” Smith who didn’t have his best stuff—but promised a different game on Sunday. Sheep also fanned 11.Young Talent’s 10 runs came off 9 hits, 3 errors and 4 left on base. The Hurricanes’ 2 runs were on 3 hits, 3 errors and they stranded 5.

Top hitters for Young Talent: Nateshon “Shadow” Thomas, 2-for-4, 2 runs scored and one run batted in. Woodrow, 2-for-4 with 2 triples, 2 runs scored and one run batted in. Penn’s lone hit in three at bats was his seventh inning 2-run homer. He scores twice and had 2 RBIs.

Rhodni Skelton was the ‘Canes leading hitter with 2 hits in 2 at bats and a run batted in.

In the women’s game, the Lady Braves out hit the Crushers with a 16-8 advantage, but the Crushers still won the game by outslugging the Lady Braves, 17-14, thanks to batting around in the second and an eight run fifth inning explosion when they sent nine to the plate.

The Crushers’ 17 runs came off 8 hits, 5 errors and 8 left on base. Lady Braves had 14 runs, 16 hits, committed 4 errors and stranded 4. Alya Smith—who had relief help from Felicia “Big Train” Wattley, got the win. Perline Scatliffe who went all the way, took the loss.

Crushers’ Marcia Stoutt was 3-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in. Shakeria Skelton had a hit in three trips to the dish, scored three times and had 3 RBIs. Jahresha Skelton went 1-for-4, scored twice and drove in three.
Laura Issac was the Lady Braves’ leading hitter with a 4-for-4 game. She scored three times and had 5 RBIs. Alva Gordon was 3-for-4. She scored once and had a run batted in.
