TORTOLA—The East took control of the game for the first time with 4 minutes and 24 seconds left in the first quarter, then David “Bolo” Lettsome sealed it in the fourth quarter after making two free throws with 18.2 seconds left for a thrilling 72-71, Saturday night victory at the Multipurpose Sports Complex in Road Town, avenging a 91-74 loss in their first encounter.
But, the Guns had several chances to steal the game under the basket after Lettsome scored, but turnovers cost them the game. “This was a really exciting game and good coaching by our coaching staff,” said the East’s coach Verne “Bego” Turnbull. “We made some turnovers but, coming down the stretch, we played a lot of defense and showed them we were willing to play under this pressure. We weren’t playing well the last time we met them. The Guns are a good team, but tonight, we did a better job.”
Guns’ coach Derwin Scatliffe said his team had poor executing in the waning moments. “The play was ran, the man got the ball, and he just miss judged where he was two times,” Scatliffe who sat on the bench long after the game ended noted. “One he had a chance to dunk it, the other to lay it up. By the time he made up his mind, it was too late.”
