TORTOLA—
Samantha John broke Chantel Scatliffe’s 12-year old 800 meters national record, while sprinter Britney Wattley qualified for the World Jr. Championships in the 200 meters, with a National Youth and BVI Scholastic record, as several athletes also recorded personal bests during the weekend Austin Sealey Classic in Barbados.

John, 17, took down Scattliffe’s, 800 meter mark of 2 minutes 19.6 seconds which had been on the books since July 1995, with a semifinal run of 2:18.79, in only her second time at the distance. She chopped her personal best from 2:24.20. Her time is also a National Jr. Record. She placed second in the final 2:22.74. John also placed second in the 400 meters in 56.60, after running 56.31 in the semis. Dominique Maloney followed in 56.85, following a 56.43 semifinal.

“Samantha is definitely on pace towards achieving greater things,” her coach and BVI Olympian Willis “Chucky” Todman said. “With her progress it’s clear that with each race she continues to improve.”

Wattley became the fourth BVI athlete to qualify for the July 8-13, World Jr. Championships in Poland, by winning the Under 17 Girls half lap in 24.55 seconds, which broke Ashley Kelly’s National Youth and BVI Scholastic Record of 24.61. She pulled Darnetia Robinson to a personal best of 25.40 in fourth. Wattley had a 24.77 semifinal time and Robinson ran 25.48.

“I knew the time was going to be fast after I realized I had taken the lead off the curve,” Wattley reflected. “After I realized that I’d qualified for the World Jr. Championships, I immediately called home to share the news.”

Maloney and Kelly were second and third respectively in the women’s 200 meters as both clocked 24.70. Wattley, Kelly, Maloney and Robinson won the 4 x 100 meter relay in a season’s best 47.05 seconds.

“This particular meet is one of which we have attended for the past four years and it’s a meet that our athletes usually perform well in and this year has been no exception,” Dag Samuel said.

Tarikah Warner, who coached by another BVI Olympian Steve Augustine, lowered her 300 meters hurdle best from 47.47 seconds to 46.60, to finish second.

Mark Kendall turned in a 100 meter season best of 10.91 seconds to place fifth, after running 11.06 in the semis. Quarter miler Yorell Ferrol was fifth in 50.80, after a 50.97 semi.

Ferrol, Keone Maduro, Mitch Christopher and Kendall were second in the men’s 4 x100 meter relay after running 42.76.
