TORTOLA—The British Virgin Islands Amateur Athletic Association will host its first Youth and Jr. Championships on the new 400 meters Mondo track at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds on May 17. The meet will also celebrate World Athletics Day.
Events will range from the 100 to 1500 meters for boys and girls. The meet will be one in a series used to select athletes for the upcoming Leeward Islands Youth and Jr. Championships later in the season. It will also be use to see where some athletes are with their preparations for the July 18-19, Caribbean Union of Teachers Games which the BVI will host.
Meanwhile, the association has embarked on improving its meet management standards and will host an IAAF TOECS Level I Course from May 15-18. The course will be conducted by former president of the Barbados Amateur Athletics Association Ester Maynard, one of the region’s leading technical officials. The course will be held at the Dept. of Youth Affairs and Sports, from 5-9 p.m. on May 15, with a 9-5 session on May 16. The Youth and Jr. Championships on May 17, will be used as a practical session for officials and the wrap up will be held between 2-5 p.m. on May 18. The association has invited several officials to attend the course.
This weekend, 22 athletes will compete in Barbados’ two day Austin Sealy Classic as a tune up ahead of next week’s competition. Comprising the team are: Boys: Kenton Todman, Keone Maduro, Mitch Christopher, Yourell Ferrol, Mark Kendall, McKenzie Baltimore and Omar Jones.
Girls: Lakisha Warner, Shameka Glasgow, K’Daja Crabbe, Chenaki Samuel, Britney Wattley, Tarikah Warner, Kaeitia Maduro, Darnetia Robinson, Ashley Kelly, Samantha John, Sanya Penn, Jackhel King, Dominique Maloney and Henrieta Alexander.
