TORTOLA
—Omar Jones became the first player to hit for the cycle this season, while leading Young Talent to a 23-9, triumph over the Braves on Saturday night, in the BVI Softball Association Arnold “Foxy” Barronville league. Young Talent used the game as a tune up for league leaders Hurricanes, whom they beat 3-1, in the opener.

Jones—the BVI national Javelin record holder—had a homer, triple, double and single during a 4-for-4 night against Braves pitching. He scored four times and had 4 RBIs. Mahal DeCastro came up a double short of joining Jones for a cycle, on a 3-for-4 night. He scored five times and drove in two.

The Braves pulled within 13-9 in the fifth, but made numerous defensive blunders to take themselves out of the game. Sirron Scatliffe who was relieved by Eli “Yampi” Nibbs, took the loss while Dwight Brookes was credited with the win as Terry Chinnery came on to close out the game. Nibbs collected two of the Braves’ four hits, scored once and drove in two.

Catcher Otis Claxton slugged a grand slam to help the Latinos salvage a weekend split, with a 13-5 victory over the Virgin Gorda All Stars—who lost their second weekend game. Claxton was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and five runs batted in. Dwayne Davies had two hits in two at bats and scored twice. The All Stars’ LeManuel Fahie had a 3-for-3 game including a homer, two runs scored and 3 RBIs. Frank Quashie finished 2-for-2. Robert Mateo got the win with Andrell Bailey suffering the defeat.

The Latinos were coming off a 19-11 loss to the Reds—who scored 10 in the second and nine in the third. Delvin “Bopper” Jennings was credited with the victory while Dwayne Davies took the loss. Lloyd Jackson, Kevi Potter and Kahlif Henley collected two hits and scored two runs respectively. Jackson—who also homered—drove in three while Jackson batted in two. Mariano Crispin and Pedro Garcia with the Latinos’ top hitters with two hits each.

Although limited to five hits, the Blue Wings capitalized on 17 walks and two hit batsmen during a 17-2 drubbing of the Virgin Gorda All Stars. Denzil Daniel tossed a no-hitter in the process for the win, with Andrell Bailey taking the loss.
