TORTOLA
—Elmore Stoutt High School senior Britney Wattley wanted to end her high school career by joining her sister DeAnna in winning the Victrix Ludorum award as the highest scoring female athlete during the Apr 24-25, inter-house sports day competition. She also wanted to leave her name—and did she ever.

In an athletic display never before seen in the annual competition that returned for the first time since 2004, Wattley, 15, not only helped Carlisle House to its first title since 1988, but was associated with five of the fastest times ever run during the competition. She captured the 100 meters in 12.39 seconds into a negative 3-5 mph headwind, demolished the 200 meter mark with a time of 24.70, and then ran a personal best 57.27 in the 400 meters.

She teamed up with Ketia Maduro, Darnetia Robinson and Tarikah Warner to shatter both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 meter records. “My performances were good, but I think I could have done better in the 200 meters,” said Wattley, who also ran the 3,000 meters during the pre sports day events and contested the 800 meters and won all of her events. “Since I knew I had to run, I did not eat before the 200 and 400 meters and I was feeling bad before the race, but, I’m satisfied.”

Wattley was hoping to qualify for the July 8-13, IAAF World Jr. championships in the 200 meters, while claiming the Victrix Ludorum. She ran 24.67 on Apr 12, which is just .03 off joining Shanice Hazel, Ashley Kelly and Chantel Malone who have already qualified. She said her time shows she can qualify if she has competition.

The 57.27 in the 400 meters she said, came after running a previous personal best of 58.06 at the Carifta Games—a time she was not satisfied with as she recorded the ninth fastest time and missed the finals. “I knew I could have done better in Carifta but, I don’t know why—maybe I was scared,” he admitted. “But, I came out and did my best.”

Wattley said it felt good to win the Victrok Ludorum—something she had been looking for since she entered high school. “I knew Chantel (Malone) wanted it and she was doing more events that me,” she recalled of the last championships held in 2004. “The last few years we didn’t have sports so, I’ve been waiting for the opportunity.”
