—George “Showadda” Burrows and Rhodni Skelton flirted with hitting for the cycle, while young Jamie Potter pitched a one hitter, as the Hurricanes clobbered the Braves, 18-2 on Sunday night, in BVI Softball Association Arnold “Foxy” Barronville league play.

Burrows had a 3-for-3 night and Skelton went 3-for-4, with each hitting a double, triple and homer in the game that was called off early. Burrows scored three times and had 5 RBIs while Skelton scored twice and had three runs batted in. Akeem “Chunky” Titley had the Braves’ lone hit, while Lionel Hodge was tagged with the loss.

“It has been a very interesting first round as the team started slowly,” noted ‘Caines manager Arnold Lettsome. “The hitting isn’t where I want it to be. Tonight we had a very good game hitting wise but we still have a ways to go.”

Lettsome said his pitching has held and they have gone 7-1 in the first round and that puts them in first place. He said there are two other teams with one loss that can end the first round by tying his team with the same record. “But we are guaranteed to be in first place at the end of this first round,” he noted. “So, I’m encouraged by what we have been doing.”

Potter, 16, is one of two young pitchers in the league and was making his second start. He said he was not in control of all his pitches but is working on his control. He has been under the guidance of the league’s top pitcher Neville “Sheep” Smith and veteran Roy “Panhandle” Hill. “I’ve been learning how to hold the ball when I’m pitching, concentrate, take my time and put it in the glove,” he said. “I still have to work on my control and my strength.”

The other game saw Young Talent’s Terry Chinnery tossing a complete game one hitter, while striking out 11, during a 9-2 victory over the Dodgers.  Andrew Stoutt who was relieved by Chris Widen in the first inning, took the loss.

Allen “Woodrow” Smith 2-for-3, scored twice and had 3 RBIs. Mahal DeCastro had a 1-for-2 game and scored twice. Zak Stoutt had the Dodgers’ lone hit, knocked in a run and scored a run.
