TORTOLA—A leadoff triple and the first run scored in the top of the first inning, might have indicated the Dodgers were showing up for a competitive game against the unbeaten Reds in the Arnold “Foxy” Barronville softball league on Tortola.
That slight ray of hope quickly faded as the Reds delivered a knockout punch, with eight of their record 10 homers and 17 of their 22 runs coming in the very first inning of Saturday night’s game at the Old Recreation Grounds.
By game’s end, the Reds had rode Darel Robinson’s one-hitter during a 22-1, Dodgers demolition, that was completed with 21 hits, one error and 4 left on base. The Dodgers had 1 run, 1 hit, 2 errors and 1 left on base, as Juana Alfardo—who collected their lone hit—was tagged with the loss.
St. Thomas’ Lloyd Jackson led the home run assault by hitting three in four at bats. He scored three times and had 4 RBIs. Kalif Henley had two homers and slugged his second grand slam of the young season on the process, to finish 3-for-4, with 2 runs scored and 7 runs batted in. Leon Martin also blasted two homers in the contest.
The slugfest weekend saw the Virgin Gorda All Stars out hitting the Braves, 8-7, but losing 13-6. The Virgin Garda All Stars finished with 6 runs on 8 hits, 7 errors and 2 left on base. Andrell Bailey took the loss.
Sirron Scatliffe hit three doubles for a 3-for-4 night as the Braves’ top hitter. He also scored three times. Clifford “Poppa D” Daniel went 2-for-4, scored two and drove in two. Kevin Issac’s 2-for-2 game was the top hitter for Virgin Gorda. Richie Morton had a hit in two plate appearances and scored twice.
Roy “Panhandle” Hill—the league’s oldest player—pitched a complete game, scattered four hits in a winning effort, as the Hurricanes leveled the Latinos, 17-5. They had 10 hits, 4 errors and 9 left on base. The Latinos had their 5 runs off 4 hits, 10 errors and 2 base runners stranded. Cedric Smith went 3-4 with 3 runs scored and drove in two for the Hurricanes. George Burrows had two hits in three at bats, scored twice and had 4 RBIs.
Jason “Mad” Fonseca was the third Blue Wings’ pitcher used to get the win, a 22-11 victory over the Dodgers. Fonseca pitched the final 3-1/3 innings and fanned five after relieving Denzil Daniel and Darwin “Chicken” Scatliffe. Catcher Raphael “Booker” Jack, was 4-for-4 with two runs batted in. Lester Mercer had a 3-for-6 game, scored three and drove in four. Austin “Woody” Maduro finished 2-for-3, with three runs scored and one run batted in.
