TORTOLA—Defending BVI Amateur Volleyball Association champions Terminators, pulled out a four set Sunday night victory over Jus Bless at the Multipurpose Sports Complex in Road Town, to extend their unbeaten streak that began at the start of last season.
In what was billed as a big game, Terminators walked off with a 27-25, 21-25, 25-16 and 25-21 triumph. “To be honest, it was a very good game,” noted Terminators player-coach Elsworth Phillip, who along with setter Osbert “Cushung” Pole had 18 points respectively. “They came out and they played very well, but I believe but what we had over them is teamwork. We don’t have internal drama, so I guess you can say team work prevails all the time.”
While Terminators have been incorporating younger players into the team, Phillip said they had to rely on their old guard and the chemistry that they have. “That’s what brought us through,” he acknowledged.
Jus Bless’ player-coach Drexel Glasgow said they came out and had a tough two point first set loss even though they were ahead a few times. After evening the game at 1-1 in the second set, he said they fell down in the third set and they were inconsistent in the fourth, but it was a good game. Jus Bless were coming off a four set Saturday night victory over the Seventh Day Adventist team. He said they tried to employ some of the plays instituted against the Adventist, versus the Terminators. “We looked a lot better in this game (working the plays) but, that’s the way it goes,” he said. “I think we had a good game plan and in my opinion, we had them,” he reflected. “It’s just a downfall on our part and mistakes. We are going to stick with the same game plan and correct our mistakes.”
Phillip said this is just the first round and they still have to go through everyone again. He said that he likes the way his team is playing, noting they are playing more games than in previous years, although not practicing as much. “We as not as winded early in the game and I guess that’s what helping us to pull through a lot of these victories.”
In other action, Janelle Scatliffe had 24 points and Celine Alphonso added 20, to lead Raw Power past Set It Off, 20-25, 25-23, 25-19 and 25-16. Tamasha Nibbs and Jahresha Skelton, who won player of the game honors, had 20 and 17 points respectively.
Defending women’s champs ‘n Motion defeated Termin ‘x, 25-6, 25-9 and 25-10. Debra Dagou and player of the game Melissa Amey, had 17 and 13 points respectively. Young Guns pinned another loss on the Seventh Day Adventist, 25-12, 18-25, 25-22 and 27-25.
