TORTOLA—The British Virgin Islands Olympic Committee will mark its first anniversary since elections in Dec 2006, with a general assembly today, where the executive body will report on its activities over the past year.

The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the BVIOC offices in the Road Reef Plaza. Besides the various reports, a new constitution which was approved by the International Olympic Committee on Nov 1, is up for ratification by its 10 members.

Following the Dec 5, 2006 elections, the BVIOC has had a busy year. The committee whose tenure runs through Dec 2008, set out to establish a structure for running the organization, resulting in a move towards professionalization, highlighted by an exchange with the Netherlands Antilles Olympic Committee Executive Director Remco Tevreden last week. That committee went through a similar process six years ago.

Over the past year, the BVIOC organized several activities involving its members including a sports administration course in May sponsored by Olympic Solidarity. Several other educational and interactive sessions were conducted in preparing members for the committee’s goal to field its largest delegation in the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.

A significant mild-stone was achieved on June 22, when the BVIOC celebrated its 25th anniversary of becoming a member of the International Olympic Committee, with a ceremony hosted by Governor David Pearey at Government house. Six of the living founding BVIOC members attended this event.
