Keron Stoute Leads Manchester to Victory

TORTOLA—Keron Stoute—who represented the BVI at last years Leeward Islands Jr. Championships where he helped the 4 x 100 meter relay team break a 31-year old record—displayed his versatility in leading Manchester High School to the title in the 66th Hartford Public High School Invitational on Saturday in Connecticut. Stoute scored 18 of his team’s 30 points in helping them to land the competition. The versatile Stoute—a Manchester senior—sprinted to third place in the 55 meters in 6.67 seconds, after finishing third in his preliminary heat in 6.77. Stoute then collected additional points on the track when he sped to 36.36 seconds, to finish third overall in the 300 meters.

Britney Wattley Off to Morgan State

TORTOLA—Sprinter Britney Wattley departed the territory on Tuesday, to pursue her academic and athletic careers, bound with a full athletic scholarship from Morgan State University in Maryland, where the head coach is Neville Hodge, a former U.S. Virgin Islands sprinter who competed in the BVI. Wattley—who has already made the qualifying standard for the IAAF World Youth Championships in Italy this summer—had the most outstanding Inter-house sports day of any female athlete in the history of the event last year, when the competition at the Elmore Stoutt High School returned for the first time since 2004.

BVI Athletics Name Athletes of The Year

TORTOLA—Sprinter Tahesia Harrigan—an IAAF World Indoor Championships 60 meters bronze medalist—was among six athletes named as the BVI Athletics Association Athletes of the Year, at the conclusion of Saturday’s first in a series of Development Track meets. It was the first time in its 38-year existence, that the association had named an athlete of the year. Harrigan—who was the 2007 OECS female athlete of the year—was joined by BVI Olympic Discus Thrower Eric “Shaq” Mathias, who added 11 feet on to the BVI Invitational Discus Throw mark, as the senior male athlete of the year.

Athletes of The Year Being Named During Development Meet

TORTOLA—The first in a series of BVI Athletics Association Development Meets will kick off at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds. The series runs though March 7. Saturday’s competition, which is expected to also attract participants from the U.S. Virgin Islands, is being used to gauge where athletes are in their training as they prepare for the 2009 season. Several BVI collegians—at home for the holidays— will also be in action during the competition. Pre registration for the event that has two field events and four track events has already begun and officials are asking coaches and managers to return forms by email to bviathletics@gmail.com by Friday.

Surprised Rowlette Wins Helmsman Award

TORTOLA—Sports always provide numerous opportunities for surprises, buzzer beaters, last innings heroics and even fantastic finishes. And for the Royal BVI Yacht Club, it came down to Saturday’s season ending Commodore’s race to decide its Helmsman of the Yea winner as there was an eight-way tie heading into the last race, after eight different winners had won club races throughout the season.

With four of the eight in the race, it was still anybody’s race for the covered award. When the last corrected time calculation was made, the award went to Kevin Rowlette. “Yes, I was quite surprised,” Rowlette said. “I had taken a three year break from sailing and only returned three months ago, but have won the last three club races and we had a good little run.
