TORTOLA—The first in a series of BVI Athletics Association Development Meets will kick off at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds. The series runs though March 7. Saturday’s competition, which is expected to also attract participants from the U.S. Virgin Islands, is being used to gauge where athletes are in their training as they prepare for the 2009 season. Several BVI collegians—at home for the holidays— will also be in action during the competition. Pre registration for the event that has two field events and four track events has already begun and officials are asking coaches and managers to return forms by email to bviathletics@gmail.com by Friday.

TORTOLA—Sports always provide numerous opportunities for surprises, buzzer beaters, last innings heroics and even fantastic finishes. And for the Royal BVI Yacht Club, it came down to Saturday’s season ending Commodore’s race to decide its Helmsman of the Yea winner as there was an eight-way tie heading into the last race, after eight different winners had won club races throughout the season.

With four of the eight in the race, it was still anybody’s race for the covered award. When the last corrected time calculation was made, the award went to Kevin Rowlette. “Yes, I was quite surprised,” Rowlette said. “I had taken a three year break from sailing and only returned three months ago, but have won the last three club races and we had a good little run.

TORTOLA—During the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games in Cartagena, Colombia, tennis player Dion Anselm came to a sobering realization. “This is way past me,” he told me during and interview following an opening round loss to a Cuban player. “When I go back home, I’m going to focus on developing the youth.” Shortly after his return, he kept his word and some 95 players on Tortola benefited from an introduction program. But, it was short lived as funding became an issue. Fast forward to 2008. In June, Anselm became president of the BVI Lawn Tennis Association. Two months later, he had secured and Olympic Solidarity grant through the BVI Olympic Committee to launch a
Tennis Talent Identification Program.

TORTOLA—Dion Anselm and newcomer Kimberly Burns were crowned First Caribbean International Bank champions on Sunday night at the Tortola Sports Club. Anselm needed three sets before downing Damon Wilson, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. “I didn’t expect it to go three sets. I thought I’d give him two straight,” Anselm said after collecting his award, then passing his prize money on to the junior female champion and runners up Alexia Alleyne Paul and Paul Oliver. “But, he played well I must say. I dropped the second set because I guess I was too overconfident in the first set.
